Zighlar rugs are named after an Austrian importer of oriental rugs who, in the eighteenth century, saw a potentially large European market for handmade rugs of particular designs and colours. Establishing a loom manufacturing business in North West Iran (Tabriz), Zighlar and Co produced handmade rugs for the European market basing their designs often on established patterns including Tabriz, Mahal and Soultan-Abad. The popularity continues today and this style retains the Zighlar name.  They are loved worldwide for the subtle use of colour and restrained design.
